Stax Museum

Stax Museum: The Sound of Memphis Soul

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is a must-see stop for anyone who wants to understand the true sound of Memphis. Located at the original site of Stax Records, the museum celebrates one of the most important record labels in American music history. While Sun Studio helped shape rock ‘n’ roll, Stax helped define soul music with a raw, powerful, emotional sound that became known around the world.

Stax Records began in 1957 as Satellite Records and later became Stax, a name created from the last names of founders Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton. From a modest Memphis studio, Stax grew into a major force in American music. Legendary artists including Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, William Bell, Albert King, and the Staple Singers all helped build the Stax sound and carry Memphis soul to the world.

One of the most interesting parts of the Stax story is that Black and white musicians worked together there during a time of segregation and racial tension in Memphis and across the South. The music created at Stax crossed boundaries and brought people together through rhythm, emotion, and unforgettable songs. The Stax sound was different from the polished sound of Motown — it was grittier, deeper, and unmistakably Memphis.

Fun facts make Stax even more memorable. Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the famous Stax house band, helped create the groove behind many classic recordings. Isaac Hayes recorded for Stax before becoming a worldwide star, and his “Theme from Shaft” became one of the most recognizable soul/funk songs ever. The museum also features incredible exhibits, records, stage costumes, memorabilia, and displays that help visitors feel the energy of the original Soulsville, U.S.A. experience.

Seeing the Stax Museum on the tour adds an essential piece to the Memphis music story. It shows how Memphis became a world capital of soul, rhythm and blues, gospel influence, and cultural creativity. Whether you love classic soul music or simply want to understand why Memphis has such a powerful musical legacy, the Stax Museum is a stop that brings the city’s sound, spirit, and history to life.
