The Peabody Hotel: Southern Elegance and the Famous Duck Walk
The Peabody Hotel is one of Memphis’s most beloved landmarks and a classic stop for anyone who wants to experience the charm, history, and personality of the city. Known as the “South’s Grand Hotel,” The Peabody has welcomed guests for generations and remains one of the most elegant and recognizable hotels in downtown Memphis. From its beautiful architecture to its grand lobby and old-world atmosphere, the Peabody gives visitors a glimpse into the refined side of Memphis history.
The current Peabody Hotel opened in 1925 and quickly became a gathering place for travelers, celebrities, politicians, musicians, and local Memphians. Over the years, it has become more than just a hotel — it is a Memphis institution. Its grand lobby, historic details, rooftop sign, and downtown location make it one of the city’s most photographed and talked-about destinations.
Of course, no visit to The Peabody would be complete without hearing about the world-famous Peabody Ducks. This fun tradition began in 1933 when ducks were placed in the lobby fountain as a joke after a hunting trip. Guests loved it, and the tradition became part of Memphis history. Today, the Peabody Ducks still make their famous Duck Walk, marching along a red carpet to the lobby fountain each morning and returning in the afternoon, led by the hotel’s official Duckmaster.
One fun fact is that the ducks live in their own rooftop “Royal Duck Palace” when they are not entertaining guests in the lobby. Another fun fact is that the formal Duck March was shaped by Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal trainer who became the hotel’s first Duckmaster in 1940 and served in that role for 50 years. Seeing The Peabody on the tour is a great way to experience one of the most unique traditions in America — a perfect mix of elegance, humor, history, and true Memphis character.
